Canon Large Format Printer Frequently Asked Questions
Which Canon series is best for architectural and engineering firms?
For AEC professionals, the Canon TM-Series (TM-340/350) offers the best balance of speed, quality, and value. These plotters print D-size CAD drawings in 21 seconds with exceptional 0.1% line accuracy. For high-volume environments needing scan capabilities, upgrade to the TX-4100 MFP for integrated 44" scanning. The TZ-32000 delivers the fastest speeds at 15 seconds per D-size for production environments. All use pigment-based LUCIA TD inks for water-resistant, archival-quality technical drawings.
What's the difference between LUCIA TD and LUCIA PRO ink systems?
LUCIA TD (Technical Drawing) uses 5-color pigment inks optimized for CAD/GIS applications—delivering sharp lines, water resistance, and 100+ year archival life. LUCIA PRO employs 12-color pigment inks for photographic reproduction with a wider color gamut (95% Adobe RGB), smoother gradations, and gallery-quality output. PRO series costs more per print ($1.50-2.00/sq ft) but produces museum-quality results. Choose TD for technical documents; PRO for photography and fine art.
Should I buy a printer-only model or MFP with integrated scanner?
Choose MFP models if you need to: digitize existing paper drawings, copy markups and redlines, scan old blueprints to PDF, or create digital archives. MFPs cost $3,000-5,000 more but eliminate outsourced scanning costs ($3-8 per sheet). Printer-only models suffice if you work exclusively with digital files. Note that scanners cannot be added later—MFP functionality must be factory-integrated. Most AEC firms find MFPs pay for themselves within 12-18 months through scanning savings.
How does Canon compare to HP DesignJet for large-format printing?
Canon imagePROGRAF advantages include: 30-40% smaller footprint, quieter operation (42dB vs 48dB), faster CAD printing (21 vs 28 seconds), included 500GB hard drive (HP charges extra), superior line accuracy (±0.1%), and lower cost per print with high-capacity inks. HP DesignJet offers slightly better photo printing speed and Adobe PostScript support on select models. Both brands provide excellent reliability, but Canon's LUCIA TD inks resist water better than HP's dye-based options.
Which Canon models offer the best value for small offices?
The Canon TM-240 (24") at $1,795 provides exceptional value for offices printing under 200 sheets monthly. It handles full D-size drawings on 24" media, uses the same professional LUCIA TD inks as larger models, and maintains the compact footprint ideal for small spaces. For slightly more capability, the TM-250 adds enhanced processing power. Both models include Wi-Fi, support mobile printing, and deliver the same print quality as production models—just at moderate speeds perfect for smaller workloads.
